Since 2006, TawSaeng, which means "to shine", has worked with Chiang Mai's most vulnerable and unprotected children. We provide support and encouragement in their education, compassionate and caring mentors and a safe environment for students to come after school each day to receive help with homework, learn English, and life-skill development. In the fight against human trafficking and poverty, we promote prevention through education, family unity and hope for a good future.
Only 43% of Northern Thai students graduate from 12th grade (Thailand Education Facts Sheet 2019 - UNICEF). Parents often do not value the role of education in protecting and providing for their children. Children end up on the streets, drawn into gangs, or are trafficked/sold into indentured servitude to bring in money for their families. These issues have contributed to cycles of generational poverty, willing participation in human and drug trafficking and addiction.
About 95% of students who attend TawSaeng graduate grade 12, and of those, 90% are/have gone on to get their Associates or Bachelors degree. The relationships our staff build as mentors with our students and their partnership with parents/guardians is key to our success. We believe positive change happens best through these caring, encouraging relationships in which our students experience significance, dignity, and have holistic support. Students share that they have a second family at TawSaeng
That children would complete secondary school and beyond and gain knowledge and skills to benefit their lives and the lives of others. Students would know their worth and choose a positive path for their life, free from harmful relationships, occupations and exploitation. That TawSaeng students would understand their rights, how to protect themselves and who to call for assistance when/if in danger. That students would transform their families and communities through love, service and mentoring
