Summary

We support two aspects of ORT SA CAPE's educational work in Cape Town. One allows children from under-resourced communities to gain exposure to science and technology, through workshops. The other involves training teachers in a range of areas, including perceptual skills, learning through play and coding, to improve the quality of education the children receive in the classroom. During the pandemic, ORT SA CAPE also started a food programme and this has continued, as assistance is still needed.

Challenge

Research shows that in South Africa, 6.5 million children under 6 are deprived of critical early learning opportunities. For every 100 children entering school, 40 will complete Matric exams (in their final year of high school); 28 will pass; 4 will study further and 1 will graduate with a degree in science or technology. Teachers greatly benefit from further training, to deliver a good quality education in the classroom. The food programme assists the children, as prices have steeply risen.

Solution

The children's workshops allow them to learn about science and technology. The teacher training workshops enable teachers to teach more effectively. This has a multiplier effect as it impacts every child they will teach. One teacher said, "Integrating LEGO into my maths and language lessons will change the way I teach... I enjoyed the [workshop's] focus on holistic development." The food programme, which was started during the pandemic, allows for the children's continued learning and health.

Long-Term Impact

The children's workshops can inspire a long-term interest in science and technology, which opens the children's minds to the possibility of careers in these areas. The teacher training workshops ensure that teachers in under-resourced communities are better equipped to deliver a quality education. This gives children more opportunities for the future. The food programme addresses an immediate need, helping the children to stay well and to avoid hunger.
