Transformation of Boy’s Life at Care Home

The 10 years old smiley faced boy is HIV positive. He lost mother when he was a toddler. His father being HIV positive in last stages brought the boy to us. The out reach worker in community has established this connectivity. Unfortunately, he lost his father too.

The family members have HIV stigma associated with this disease. The boy along with his twin brother and sister [ both HIV positive] were taken as beneficiaries in care home level. The poor socio economic back ground also troubled all these siblings in family.

At the admission time the boy was very weak. He was put on special diet. The supplementary nutrition packs were introduced for daily intake of food part. The medical care was immediately drawn attention of medical team associated with care home level. ART drug adherence was monitored regularly for such child in care home level. He has cooperated a lot in terms of drug usage on daily basis.

The schooling was never properly given attention while staying with parents. But now he is enrolled in private school. He has passed out 4^th standard with bright colors. The interest lies with him to study science in higher classes.

He is not only good in studies but has computer skills too. The knowledge gained in school is applied while staying in care home as and when needed. The GLOBAL GIVING help received will surely make this child to reach new heights in academics.

The continued support from like-minded people over the years can make us to strengthen such children’s better living at care home level.

Background

Partially blind girl child was found sitting idle at Film Nagar,Sai Baba temple, in Hyderabad.She was identified by the Tv 5 [telegu news channel ] team. The child is infected with HIV+ as both parents turned out to be positive cases.She lost both the parents with HIV earlier. After knowing about the child situation, TV5 director and his team admitted the girl in DESIRE Society,Hyderabad Institutional care home.

Changes in life pattern of child

Since the child was admitted in the DESIRE Society ,we are rendering its best for the quality of life . At the time of admission ,she was malnourished and badly required medical attention. Main challenge was to improve her CD 4 count which was found to be very low. She was offered proper counseling, treatment and medicines for opportunistic infections (OIs) by our medical team. She has received round the clock health care and monitoring.

The child was put on ART (Antiretroviral Treatment, a lifesaving drug) immediately after admission to care home. She is also put with a balanced diet as ART has got more side effects. DESIRE Society has put more attention on planned nutritional diet which truly helped this child to continue drug adherence. So this led her to gain physical weight . After these continuous efforts are put by DESIRE, now her health condition is getting stable and heading towards progression.

Consultation for her eye treatment is under process DESIRE Society is working to bring support for the treatment and for the connectivity of the eye hospital in this regard. Extra care by care takers is focused in her case.

Initially, in campus schooling is assigned in her case and she sits with zeal to study further in outside school too. This year the transformation in her schooling is observed. We got her admitted in private school along with other inmates of care home. She is performing well in studies.

The Global Giving support can bring in protective shell for such children who are badly in need of extra care / spending required to get smile on their faces.

Success story of Girl Child

The 8 year old girl [now at DESIRE Society Hyderabad Care Home ] was at home with her grandmother. After the demise of her parents [ parents died with HIV ] , grandmother has taken up her responsibility. The girl was tested and she turns out to be HIV reactive child. The baby was contracted the disease during her birth.

Grandmother’s poor economic condition caused this girl suffered yet again. Even, grandmother is old so she wanted child to be protected in the safe hands.The health condition of child started deteriorating; thereby it was difficult for grandmother to take care of her. She started looking for helping hand to accommodate the baby.Thus, the outreach worker of DESIRE Society came in contact with the family of this girl.

At the admission time, she was quite weak physically. Our team had designed specific diet chart for her which took few months for her to gain strength and restore health. The ART (antiretroviral treatment) drug adherence is maintained very well within scope of care home, IDA Bollaram. The supplementary nutrition kit[ Pediasure / Zincovit syrup/Calcimax P syrup are main components] is added up to give a balanced diet pattern for such special [HIV] child.

The health condition of this girl improved under the supervision of team of doctors and paramedical staff.The opportunistic infection of ear infection is under control because of presence of medical-care team. Health gain of this baby has motivated us to sending her to school. Hence, she has started going to private school [ SSVN school close by to care home]. Now our focus is on over all development of child.She is pet of her teachers because of smiley face.

Now she speaks with a confidence and learns very fast from older inmates at care home level.She wants to be a teacher in her life, the baby says. “ DESIRE Society “ stands for fulfilling the dreams of this innocent cute girl.

The continued support from GlobalGiving over the years has influenced DESIRE Society to serve such children suffering with HIV/AIDS in India since 2005.
