Queridos amigos,

Este año es muy especial. Debido a la pandemia del COVID-19, nuestro país se encuentra en estado de emergencia desde marzo. Los niños no pueden ir a la escuela y hemos tenido que adaptarnos a esta situación y re-inventar nuestra forma de educación.

La escuela a distancia ha sido un reto para nosotros ya que la mayoría de nuestras familias no tienen acceso a internet y casi no tienen conexión de teléfono. A pesar de esto hemos ido encontrando formas de estar comunicados con los niños, de seguir su desarrollo de cerca, de seguir estableciendo y fortaleciendo los vínculos afectivos y manteniendo despierto su interés por aprender.

Cada mes entregamos la "caja mágica" , que es un kit de materiales que acompañan el proyecto que se está trabajando. Así nos aseguramos de que todos los niños tengan los materiales necesarios y que la enseñanza siga siendo dinámica, activa y participativa.

Nuestras niñas y niños están motivados y contentos. Siguen aprendiendo mucho, aunque extrañan su colegio y a sus compañeros.

Tendremos que esperar hasta el año que viene para volver a encontrarnos presencialmente. Mientras tanto, seguiremos haciendo lo mejor que podemos.

Facing a challenging scholar year...

Thanksgiving Ceremony

This is not a normal beginning for our scholar year at Yachay Kuska school.

Teachers have been getting ready during February, they ´ve participated in teacher trainings, planned classes, decorated and organized all the different spaces of the school.

On March 10th the school was full of children, all with big smiles in their faces. It was a great day, full of laughter, joy, reunions, hugs and games. Children came with their families and we shared a wonderful time toghether.

As every year, we started with a traditional thanksgiving ceremony. We made an offering to the "Pachamama" (MotherEarth) to give thanks for a new year, for being toghether, for the opportunity to attend school... We also asked for our wishes for the year using a "kintu" (three coca leaves toghether, as the inca tradition) that we blew in the direction of the "Apus" (sacred mountains) around us and then offered to Pachamama to be burried.

The following three days passed with normality and joy, until we received the sad news that a virus was spreading all over the world. Peru entered a state of emergency and schools had to suspend classes indefinitelly.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the future has never felt so unpredictable.

These are challenging times for us all.

Right now, we’re doing everything possible to sustain daily operations and provide education services to our community. We have started a distance program with a close support and accompaniment to all families (most of them don’t have a computer or internet connection at home so online programs are not a possibility yet) and many have expressed they feel happy and satisfied having different activities to do and contact with their tutor and peers during the quarantine. While there’s a lot of uncertainty, we know that we need to adapt fast to our changing reality. Now, more than ever, our community needs us.

Over 90% of our community is a beneficiary of our Scholarship Fund. Without tourism and work most of our families can´t even afford their tuition. Despite we have reduced our expenses to the minimum posible we will need to cover the difference and consider giving full scholarships to the most needed. It is in moments like this that we need each other´s support and don´t turn our backs on anyone who needs us.

We know it´s a taugh moment for all, but if you are in the position to support our cause, we would be very grateful.
