Challenge

War-affected youth carry significant psychological burdens, compounded by social exclusion arising from their loss of family members and previous affiliations with conflict-participant groups. Assisting their reintegration into normal social and economic life, in a manner that is ultimately self-sustaining, would show them and their young peers that a) their lives are important and have value b) their life experiences can be made positively meaningful and c) their participation matters to other

Solution

This project will admit an initial cohort of 50 of the most promising and potentially influential (among their peers) of the war-affected youth in the region, according to their level of curiosity and positive engagement, and provide nine months of residential training in various economically productive, regionally-appropriate disciplines, in the presence of psychosocial support, constant follow-up and monitoring designed to maintain engagement and progress.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate and rehabilitate 50 former child soldiers, ex-combatants and other vulnerable youth to be transformed from excluded and burdened dependents into included and empowered citizens and productive workers and entrepreneurs. They will in turn demonstrate to their peers and their communities that change is possible, and touch off a virtuous cycle of positive development that, even if only involving a few more at first, promises to transform war-affected youth into a good force.
