Summary

In Brazil, when adolescents who have experienced violence turn 18 and must leave institutional shelters, many lack family support, jobs, or housing. Grupo Nos supports 75 teens ages 14-19 in five key areas: education, citizenship, employability, housing, and financial literacy. This project also provides Portuguese and Math tutoring to 15 teens, helping reduce learning gaps and expand future opportunities. Join us this #GivingTuesday2025

Challenge

The National Council of Justice reports that 9,913 adolescents in Brazil's foster care system must leave shelters upon turning 18, often without support. These youth face additional challenges due to low educational outcomes. In 2022, PISA revealed that 73% of Brazilian 15-year-olds lacked basic math skills, compared to 31% in OECD countries, and half of students struggled with reading comprehension, highlighting the urgent need for focused educational support.

Solution

It addresses the problem by supporting 15 adolescents, aged 14 to 19, in their transition to independent adult life in Sao Paulo. Through individual counseling and bi-weekly group meetings, it focuses on reducing educational deficits in Portuguese and Math, providing pedagogical support for fundamental skills such as text interpretation, writing, and basic math operations. The project includes an initial diagnosis and quarterly evaluations, ensuring progress and promoting educational success.

Long-Term Impact

This project empowers young adults transitioning out of foster care, providing them with the skills and resources to lead autonomous lives. By emphasizing foundational education in Portuguese and Math, alongside critical areas such as employment, housing, and civic engagement, the initiative equips them to secure a place in the labor market, establish stable living conditions, and actively participate in society. This comprehensive approach helps break the cycle of vulnerability.
