Summary

Jafra's project will allow 1200 children and youth Palestinian and Syrian internally displaced students to access education in several locations in Syria. One of the consequences of war was the fall back of the educational sector where a significant number of schools were shut down due to the insufficient resources. Jafra believes that education is crucial for creating community resilience. Thus, Jafra's students are also supported in their preparation to sit for official governmental exams.

Challenge

Given the economic crisis in Syria, a large part of students is still left with no access to education; this is due to a lack of space in official schools, drop-out related to the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of funds from the families to afford the basic stationaries. The most critical levels are the Brevet and Baccalaureate; many youths fail due to a lack of preparation. These exams are highly demanding; to succeed, students must attend preparation classes in private centers charging heavy fees.

Solution

If our centers access to more learning materials, stationary and teachers, we will open extra places and welcome all the students on the waiting lists. This is crucial especially for the students who found no place at all in the regular schools. Jafra aims to welcome 1200 students this school year; 300 per location. The infrastructures are available, we only need the funding for teachers' salaries, teaching materials and stationary. Each year, Jafra achieves a remarkable impact with 90% success.

Long-Term Impact

Education is not just the matter to succeed in exams; it protects children and youth, empowers them, their households, and communities to recover from crises by increasing their resilience. Education paves their way to a better future. As a long-term impact, it works as a virtuous circle; successful parents at school are more equipped to push their children be educated and earn diplomas. A large amount of educated persons leads to empowered communities, able to take decisions for themselves.
