Send a Child in India to School for a Year

Amidst the Aravalli mountain ranges some 25 Kilometers from Udaipur is a little hamlet called Badanga. Here, Seva Mandir runs a Siksha Kendra (Non Formal Education Center) for the children to ease the access of education in the remote hilly terrain. Pushpa, a lady in her late twenties run the center.

Pushpa’s NFE is not just about fun and learning but also about values and of humanity. It so happened that on the dawn on 25th July, two of her students was bit by venomous snake at their residence, while both were asleep. Dharma, the elder of the two died instantaneously, Khyali was in a state of comma for nine days followed by pneumonia. His treatment in the nearby private hospital was a costly affair.

 Seeing the financial difficulties that the family was facing, the NFE students collected whatever little they had from their piggy bank and handed a total of Rs. 400 to Pushpa.

Pushpa further contributed Rs. 500 from here salary for Khyali’s treatment. Each day, during the morning assembly, the children pray for Khyali’s health, and are looking forward for a day when he would join them again. 

We at the Non Formal Education Centers do not believe that education is all about studying but also inculcating values that would make the world a better place.  Seva Mandir is running 170 centers across 600 neglected villages providing access to education to around 6000 children every year.

It takes Time to imbibe those values and I am proud to say that it has been possible with your support that we are able to inculcate values besides educating through our centers

Dear Friends,

Seva Mandir is working on providing essential services with one of them being education. Basic education is offered to children who might otherwise receive none, in all of the 171 Shiksha Kendras (Schools) that run across six blocks in Udaipur District. As these children are often the first generation learners in their households, they are also given the confidence to persist with their studies. Seva Mandir also works with their parents to encourage attendance of their wards in the school.

Friends, I am sharing with you story of Jyoti who is now studying at our education centre.

Jyoti, 9 years of age, belongs to a small village and is currently studying at one of Seva Mandir’s Shiksha Kendra (school) in Kherwara Block. While Jyoti had always wanted to go to school, her parents never let her do so. Her father in particular was against girls receiving education. Jyoti’s father who by profession is a mason got involved in helping build a Shiksha Kendra for the students from his village. During this process, several community members and representatives from Seva Mandir tried to convince him about the importance of education and in particular girl education. Jyoti’s father finally let her daughter enroll in a Shiksha Kendra. Even though she entered the Shiksha Kendra late, the instructors are trying their level best to help her match up to the level of her classmates of the same age. Currently, she is studying at Level C and she hopes she will become an instructor one day to help more girls like her receive education. Jyoti’s father is also supportive of her efforts and has decided that Jyoti will only get married after she is 18 and has completed her education.
