Ouelessebougou Alliance has been busy the past several months supporting our education programs, specifically supporting the teachers and preparing for our adult literacy workshops to resume at our 12 partner schools.
Emergency Relief to Educators
In the past several months we began visiting each of our partner schools to deliver bags of rice to teachers to help subsidize their compensation that has yet to arrive from the government this year. So far we have been able to visit 10 out of 12 schools and will deliver bags of rice to the remaining two schools in the next month.
2023 Literacy Workshops are Underway!
Ouelessebougou Adult Literacy Workshops started again this month and will finish at the end of April. We work with our 12 partner schools to host adult literacy workshops that provide increased education in the native language of Bambara to students aged 12 and up.
Ouelessebougou Alliance provides teacher training, supplies, and a stipend for each literacy instructor. The village takes responsibility for the management of classes and school facilities, and the teachers instruct students on basic reading, writing and mathematics skills in Bambara. Literacy is key to escaping poverty by improving economic opportunities and empowering individuals to make healthier decisions.
So far this year, 72% of our adult literacy students are women and 80% are over the age of 19 with 350+ students enrolled. We couldn’t be more thrilled to see these classes start again this year and look forward to seeing their progress over the next 3 months.
Literacy Workshop Spotlight:
The Tamala school started in early January with 60 students enrolled (35 first-year students and 25 second-year). 100% of the students attending adult literacy courses in Tamala are women.
Thank you for your continued support of our education programs. It is so exciting to see the impact of education in these communities and we cannot wait to continue sharing that with you. Thank you for being a part of the change!
