In April, our adult literacy workshop wrapped up for the year. We had 414 total students participate in our workshops. Over 70% of those students were women and 20% of students were below the age of 18. Our literacy workshops include two years of classes, year one, and year two.
Before we closed classes, the literacy workshop teachers participated in an exam put on by the local education department to test the teacher’s knowledge of the materials. Our teachers did amazing and the top three were given a certificate and a small prize. Our literacy students also participated in an end of year exam and we are proud to see their progress.
The adult literacy rate of people over the age of 15 is just 30% in Mali. Literacy is key to escaping poverty by improving their economic opportunities and empowering individuals to make healthier decisions. We are excited for the futures of each of our literacy students and look forward to having many back for the second year of courses in January 2024.
Aminata is one of our year two adult literacy students whose ability to read has impacted her ability to support her son’s education. Please watch this video with her story that illustrates, when you educate a mother you are educating a family.
Thank you for being a part of educating the next generation of Malians.
