Summary

Mammadu is a non-profit organization which provides education, nutritional services, healthcare, and a safe environment to 60 children who are vulnerable and/or orphaned due to extreme poverty or having lost a parent to HIV/AIDS or another health condition. These children live in informal housing settlements in Namibia, Africa, and without the help of Mammadu they would not have access to healthy regular meals, a proper education, or a safe place to learn and play.

Challenge

Mammadu is nested in the informal settlement of Otjomuise, which is on the outskirts of Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. While Namibia is a middle income country, it has great income inequality resulting from years of apartheid and most people in the informal settlements are living on less than one US dollar per day. The high rates of poverty lead to poor nutrition, poor health, and lack of education for the children of that area.

Solution

Mammadu serves orphans and vulnerable children by providing pre-primary education, afterschool tutoring, nutritious meals and snacks, other resources (clothing, health care, etc.), supervision and a safe place to play. They also provide funding and transportation for a group of older children to attend a private school where they have the opportunity to receive quality education that would otherwise be unavailable in their region.

Long-Term Impact

By providing these children with educational opportunities, healthcare and proper nutrition it will change the course of their lives. They will have a greater chance of passing the grade 10 exam that is necessary before the child can continue with the last two years of school and graduate from high school. If the child does not pass the exam, their education stops at grade 10. The kids at Mammadu have better chances of going to college, becoming employed and ultimately overcoming poverty.
