Priti is a 9-year-old girl from a migrant family originally
from Uttar Pradesh. Her family moved to Gurgaon in search of better
livelihood opportunities. Her parents work as street vendors and struggle
to support their six children with limited income. Due to financial
constraints and prevailing gender bias, Priti was not enrolled in school, as
her parents prioritized the education of their sons.
During a community survey conducted under the Education on Wheels
(EOW) project, Priti was identified as an out-of-school child. The project
team conducted multiple home visits and counseling sessions with her parents to raise
awareness about the importance of girls’ education. To further support the family, the team
coordinated with the school to facilitate a waiver of school fees for Priti’s brothers and
assisted in preparing the necessary affidavit, helping reduce the family’s financial burden.
Following sustained engagement and support, Priti was enrolled in the Education on
Wheels Learning Center, where she now attends regularly and actively participates in
learning activities. This year, she also appeared for the Open Basic Education (OBE)
examination, enabling her to continue her educational journey.
Priti’s case demonstrates how targeted outreach, family counseling, and academic support
can address barriers to girls’ education. With support from donors, the Education on
Wheels initiative continues to create opportunities for vulnerable children like Priti to
access education and build a better future.
