From the Hearth, Women Strengthen Community Life in Patateel, Chiapas

In the community of Patateel, 15 women actively participated in the self-production of fuel-efficient stoves. They built the stoves themselves, combining technical knowledge with their everyday cooking experience.

During the work sessions, the participants adjusted the measurements and features of the new stoves to ensure they would be durable and efficient. Thanks to these adjustments, each stove can help save up to two trees per year, contributing to the preservation of common goods and reducing deforestation.

"The upper part of the mountain is losing its forest because we’re cutting down trees for firewood and to plant our milpas. Every day we have to walk farther to find firewood, or we have to start buying it."

They self-produced the stoves, combining technical knowledge with their lived experience in the kitchen. This process also improves their health by reducing smoke exposure.

"The smoke is also harming us at home, since our kitchens don’t have chimneys or are very closed in. When we cook with firewood, the smoke spreads all over the house—especially in the places where we sleep."

The entire process strengthens their skills and community organization, as they come together to self-produce the stoves. Each stove represents the effort and determination to transform living conditions through collective work. In every hearth, a more dignified way of living is ignited, with women at the forefront of change, care, and community organization.
