  • Dry toilets: an alternative to the water crisis

In the Community of Jomulcul'ja, 18 families self-produced their dry toilets. Thanks to this, they have achieved significant water savings, with a monthly average of 1,680 liters per family. This saving is very important because it reduces the pressure on local water sources.

On the other hand, the use of dry toilets also contributes to improving hygiene and reduces the risk of waterborne diseases by avoiding direct exposure to human waste. In addition to their effectiveness in waste management, these toilets play a crucial role in soil and water preservation.

  • Women and water

Composting toilets have helped alleviate women's workload associated with carrying water, giving them at least 3 additional hours a week to dedicate to other tasks and activities that enrich their daily lives, especially during the dry months.

Women are also being trained in water management and proper hygiene practices. These efforts not only seek to improve the health and well-being of women, but also empower them to actively participate in decision-making related to water and the environment in their communities.

  •  Building together a vital ecosystem

The implementation of agroecological practices, the promotion of rainwater harvesting systems and training on the sustainable use of water that are based on the water analyzes, have helped to improve water quality, which can be seen above all in its smell and color.

These measures have not only had a positive impact on community health, by providing cleaner and safer water for consumption, but have also benefited local biodiversity by reducing pollution, which in turn allows natural habitats to be restored.

In addition, the promotion of agroecological practices, the promotion of crop diversification, as well as the reduction of the use of agrochemicals, have contributed to having a more sustainable and healthy environment for communities.
