Summary

JEN has been providing humanitarian aid in Iraq since the commencement of its projects in Baghdad, 2003. JEN has subsequently expanded its target areas for 6 provinces, where it has continued to improve the educational environment through its school rehabilitation programmes. Since 2014, the outcomes of Iraq crisis were the cause of vast numbers of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). JEN has been carrying on humanitarian aid for the IDPs and assisting the returnees' livelihood.

Challenge

The new administration has attempted to stabilize the situation, but they have been unable to take drastic measures required to eradicate terrorism or solve the security problem. Its condition has made post-war reconstruction very difficult. Focusing on people's circumstances, there is a debilitating lack of water, electricity, and the social services e.g. education. Also, livelihood recovery is loomed large in the returnees. As of Oct. 2016, the number of the retunees is about 1,050,000.

Solution

JEN's effort in Iraq focuses on its School Rehabilitation Programme, which place or fix water systems and toilets, in collaboration with Iraqi Ministry of Education and UN agencies. JEN also distribute cleaning kits to pupils for the continued maintenance of schools after our project is completed, and we intend to provide good learning environments for the children of Iraq. Also, JEN's support for the retunees' capacity building is that they could re-start livelihood at home town easily.

Long-Term Impact

JEN believes in practical measures dealing with immediate situations which contribute to the long-term goal of self-reliance for communities. The betterment of educational environments and raising awareness of hygiene do not have immediate benefits, but it would be long-reaching and positive consequences.
