PLAY brings new pedagogical methods to improve in-school and out-of-school education in Senegal through sports. The use of sports and games by teachers and organizers is a source of fulfillment for children and a solution for their academic success.
In Senegal, public education suffers from quality. Only two-thirds of children in elementary school are enrolled, with many families preferring to offer religious instruction in the light of the shortcomings of the public school system. The quality of education is impaired by an unsuitable environment: overcrowded classrooms, limited teaching time, and outdated teaching materials. In middle school, less than one child in two is enrolled.
In several regions of Senegal, the project will strengthen the quality of education offered by public schools and provide quality extracurricular activities for children, also allowing them to strengthen their life skills. PLAY operates by training educational actors in pedagogical methods based on games and sports, placing the student in an active learning situation. The educational contents are co-created in Senegal to be adapted to the context.
The long-term objective is to reduce the school dropout rate in Senegal. It is also to promote the development of children, especially young girls, through access to sports and leisure activities. Finally, it is to enhance the value of the education and animation jobs by reinforcing the skills of professionals and their pleasure in supervising and teaching.
