Happy Thanksgiving!
While I know this report is a bit late, we continue to make steady progress toward adding solar capacity at HCAS in Belize. While I have not made a sight visit since my last report, several groups have done so, including one in June that completed replacing all of the older fluorescent lighting with new LEDs. The cost of the LED's was covered by an external donor, and we are very thankful for that. This has taken another chunk out of our monthly electric bill, meaning that a larger part of our existing solar production can provide for appliances and the office complex, which uses the most.
Looking back at our egauge history over the last several months, e.g. July 1 - October 31, the system (1) that provides SVP generation to the office complex generated 37.5% (first image below) of needed power. Admittedly this is smaller than desirable, but with the zero-grid-feed units working well, we can scale this up dramatically. In fact, we are now in the process of getting additional quotes from our partners SESB in Belmopan.
As for System 2, for the same period of time, it genererated about 34% of demand (second image below).
These figures also include -- at least climatologically -- the cloudiest months of the year in Belize as well as the first time all of the school has been in session together (full classrooms) since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. I've included a couple of recent pictures from the school taken since the opening of school in late August, 2022.
As for the school's overall funding picture, the combination of supply chain issues, loss of work due to COVID, and global inflation has left the public school system in Belize with -- essentially -- no buffer. That is, there is no capacity to either make improvements to or pay for maintenance on schools facilities nor to address teacher salaries. In fact, teachers were asked to take a 10% pay CUT as a result of government financial woes. Thus, the more we can do here -- to reduce the bills the school needs to pay to remain viable -- the more the school will be able to weather these storms. We are fortunate to have a wonderful Principal and dedicated teachers who are fully devoted to the children and their families; yet all still struggle to make ends meet.
Thus, we remain extremely thankful for you, our supporters and donors, that continue to make an incredible difference in helping not only improve the environment but keep our doors open. I look forward to my next report where I will provide an updated plan for further expanding our solar capacity.
With much gratitude,
John
