Research Camp Renovations

Summary

Our team of dedicated local and international scientists, researchers, and educators are seeking your urgent assistance to renovate our research camp in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Botswana. This camp is the heart of our operations, facilitating urgent elephant research and supporting rural communities in fostering human-elephant coexistence. It is also home to our dedicated staff. Without immediate funding, our ability to continue these vital efforts will be severely compromised.

Challenge

Despite our best efforts, the harsh natural elements of this unforgiving environment have taken a toll on our camp's infrastructure. Amongst other challenges, our canvas tents are collapsing, termites have eaten wooden floors, and our plumbing system has shifted in the sand. These conditions not only compromise the liveability and safety of our camp but also divert precious time and resources away from our essential research, community development and education initiatives.

Solution

After exploring various long-lasting options, we have found a local contractor that offers excellent value and expertise. The rebuild will include: 1) Shoring and stabilising 3 converted shipping containers that function as our living, working & storage space 2) Shoring up the sewage and plumbing system 3) Building platforms for solar panels and constructing a monkey-proof rubbish cage 4) Rebuilding the office, deck, and tent decks with termite-resistant wood 5) Replacing shade cloth over tents

Long-Term Impact

Having a comfortable & pleasant space to live & work in will enable our team to focus on our vital research, community development and education work. It will ensure the valuable equipment we need for this work is kept safe, dry, and away from inquisitive rodents and other wildlife that can damage such equipment. It will enable us to host local & international students, interns & volunteers so we can build capacity in the conservation realm as well as host donors and visiting scientists.
