Summary

Endangered Bornean elephants including orphaned babies are coming into captivity as a result of human-elephant conflict. These elephants need specialised care to recover physically, socially and emotionally from this trauma. We are working collaboratively with facilities both in Borneo and around the world to improve the well-being of elephants and other animals in captivity. By sharing skills and knowledge with animal caregivers, we are helping animals to thrive rather than just survive.

Challenge

Elephants are highly intelligent animals with complex needs and social structures. Sadly, as a result of human-animal conflict, many animals including elephants are displaced from their natural environment, forcing them into captive situations. This requires a significant commitment to their lifelong care. The facilities that take on this challenge often struggle to meet their welfare needs.

Solution

We support and empower animal care staff providing training and advice, including species-specific knowledge, veterinary care, diet and nutrition, bespoke enclosure design and enrichment programmes. Through conducting welfare assessments we identify a plan of action to improve welfare standards and care for individual elephants and other animals in need of help. We also support campaigns to improve animal welfare legislation where we can.

Long-Term Impact

Knowledge is power! With your support, we can continue improving the welfare of captive elephants and other wild animals worldwide by working tirelessly to provide long-term support to animal care staff. Our ultimate goal is to alleviate suffering, giving a voice to the voiceless and driving forward animal welfare improvements to make a positive difference to the lives of animals.
