Summary

Unsustainable development and encroachments inside the Indian forests are killing endangered Asian elephants at an alarming rate. Every year18-20 elephants die in train collisions alone. Speed restrictions are not enforced even inside protected areas, while many accidents occur outside too. An early warning pilot system has averted 800+ train collisions with elephants Jan.2023-May 2024. It cautions train drivers of elephant presence, giving them enough time to apply brakes and prevent tragedies!

Challenge

West Bengal, home to nearly 100 million people, is the 4th most densely populated Indian state-and a graveyard for elephants. It ranks 2nd in elephant deaths on train tracks. In August 2023, a pregnant elephant was struck and killed in Buxa Tiger Reserve. In 2010, seven elephants were crushed by a speeding train. Reckless encroachments-train tracks, highways, and expanding infrastructure-sever their migratory routes, leaving countless elephants to die in heart-wrenching tragedies each year.

Solution

EleSense, a tested and tried life-saving innovation, prevented 1,339 train collisions with elephants between Jan 2023 and Nov 2024. We will continue to expand this technology inside Buxa Tiger Reserve and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and beyond. The system alerts train pilots within 750 meters of elephants, enabling safe braking, while notifying railway authorities and deterring elephants from tracks. EleSense is transforming conservation, safeguarding gentle giants, and promoting harmony.

Long-Term Impact

Our sensor-based early warning system, developed by indigenous tech experts, includes siren, light, and GPS modules. Built to withstand weather and wildlife, it reduces maintenance costs, protects investments, and ensures elephant safety. VFAE partners with Nature Mates, SNAP Foundation, and WB government agencies for implementation. Funds raised will support installing more EleSense units near train tracks cutting through forests, safeguarding elephants and fostering coexistence.
