Today we want to share with you about Vy, a 23-year-old woman living in Siem Reap who has had some struggles in her family since the onset of COVID. Here is how we helped her and her family holistically and we are delighted they are in a better place...
Vy lives with her husband and 4-year-old son. After they got married, they had a good relationship and had enough income to support the family. However, since the pandemic, which has hugely affected the Cambodian economy, their relationship started to struggle. They have felt stressed, argued often, and violence has occurred. Each day they were not getting along well with each other because they have lost their jobs and had no income to support the family. Due to the situation, Vy has met with WRC Community Ambassador and raised the challenges she has been facing in order to seek support from the local authority and our organization. She felt depressed because she had nowhere else to go, and she didn't know what to do to get income to survive for her family. The community ambassador registered her name and referred her to Women’s Resource Center to receive counselling support.
After meeting with the WRC social worker for basic counselling an assessment for her family, she received the first emergency food package and hygiene supplies. We were also able to support the family with some home gardening. They received seeds, and 10 chickens to raise as a food and potential income source. We soon started to see things improve for Vy and her family.
"She said the garden means a lot to her and can make their own food during the hard time of covid 19. She also shared the vegetables that they grow with the other family in the village. They raise the chicken very well and they manage to keep some chicken to produce more baby chicken and some they can sell. Vy said “I was very happy when I first received the emergency food package, some seeds and chicks and I have shared some chicks to my sister to raise them too.'" - Pisey KHIM (Program Manager)
Soon we started to see good progress in the family. We decided to support her with another15 chickens and some training to help them raise healthy chicks and produce more eggs. The couple told us that they plan to expand and increase the number of chickens plus grow more vegetables so that they can sell at the market for more income to support the family.
Vy said "Since I have started the home garden I can have vegetables to cook, I have also shared some of the vegetables with my neighbours. With the support from WRC, my husband and I are starting to have good relationship. I now have got a job, so I can have some income to support my family and my husband helps to look after and take care of our son, garden and the chickens. So now our family is back on track and we can support each other better than before”
Lastly, they really thank YOU for your generosity and kind support which has helped us to be able to support the families in the community who face the challenges like this family during this time of crisis. We really appreciate your kindness!
