Summary

This project will help the nearly 2 million Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) and refugees that are currently in the Kurdish Region of Iraq (KRI) after having fled from IS. The most pressing need today is 'winterization' - blankets, mattresses, coats, socks, warm clothes, and shoes. This project will also evaluate the long-term needs of these populations.

Challenge

There are nearly 2 million IDPs and refugees in the Kurdish Region of Iraq. Fleeing IS and conflict. They are coming with absolutely nothing but the clothes on their backs, and with winter approaching -places in this area get up to 1m of snow and temperatures that drop to -15C - the situation is increasingly desperate. As the battle for Kobani rages on, 1,000 to 1,500 of its residents are crossing through Turkey into Iraq every day, overwhelming already stretched resources

Solution

This project will enable IsraAID to identify gaps in the needs currently being provided to the IDPs and refugees, and fulfill them. This will be done on two levels - 1) Direct relief aid - ranging from food to clothes to medical supplies, and 2) Long-term capacity-building for local governance and organizations active on the ground.

Long-Term Impact

The project has already provided blankets and mattresses to over 1,000 families (approx. 6,000 people), and milk powder for all the 1,015 babies under one year in this 14,000 strong camp. The long-term impact will be in the improved services and general quality of living offered by the camp officials and supporting organizations.
