On the February 6-7th 2023, two severe earthquakes rocked the southeast of Turkey and northern Syria. A total of more than 59,000 casualties were recovered, and over 125,000 people were injured. Caritas provided immediate emergency assistance and is currently implementing the long-term support.

Emergency Relief After the Earthquake
Caritas provided immediate assistance following the earthquake through the distribution of food, hygiene kits, and drinking water, as well as emergency shelters, clothing, blankets, and mattresses for those whose homes had collapsed. Additionally, Caritas offered medical and psychological first aid, distributed medications, and cash assistance to help people meet their basic needs during the initial challenging period.

Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
In the mid-term, Caritas is still assisting in the rehabilitation of damaged homes (including cash-support), the repair of schools, and the construction and renovation of sanitation facilities. During the winter months, we support people in coping with the cold season, providing items such as generators, stoves, electric heaters, winter clothing, and blankets.

Long-term Assistance
To help people rebuild their lives in the long-term, Caritas supports entrepreneurs, farmers, and women in rebuilding their livelihoods. We also organize tutoring and other educational initiatives to help individuals catch up on missed school material and provide literacy courses for illiterate women.

2024-2025 the following interventions and support measures are planned:

  • 1,850 additional cash payments – for essential needs, including repair works on personal homes or business buildings.
  • 6,000 individuals participating in psychosocial and protection measures.
  • Over 800 students will be engaging in educational initiatives such as tutoring, extracurricular activities, etc.
  • 250 entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock keepers will receive support through business training, mentoring, and financial assistance, enabling them to resume their businesses and establish a stable livelihood. This indirectly benefits employees and their families as well.
  • 6,560 individuals will be receiving water and sanitation services.
  • 54 individuals will be receiving medical support.
  • 20 family homes will be undergoing renovations
