Healthcare That Saves Lives

Dr. Tom is a doctor at the Mother 
of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba 
Mountains of northern Sudan. Every 
day, he and his team treat up to 
700 people suffering from 
malnutrition and undernourishment. 
The aid project is supported by 
Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

The need for aid has increased 
dramatically due to the war

"Many people travel for days on foot, 
putting themselves at risk of attacks 
and landmines," reports the 61-year-old.

"The need for medical assistance has 
increased dramatically since the outbreak 
of the war, while our resources are 
severely limited. There is widespread 
malnutrition in the Nuba Mountains. We 
have tens of thousands of displaced people
who cannot farm. Therefore, we continue 
to need nutritional supplements and 
medications to treat the malnourished 
people who come to us."

Medical Aid Closes Supply Gaps

The Mother of Mercy Hospital is one of 
numerous facilities supported by our 
alliance organization action medeor's 
global medical aid program. The alliance 
organization closes supply gaps in numerous 
crisis and refugee countries, primarily in Africa.

Aid providers support small health clinics and 
mobile pharmacies as well as larger hospitals 
like the Mother of Mercy Hospital. Medications 
are either procured locally or shipped from 
stockpiles in Germany, Tanzania, or Malawi.

“Every donation makes a difference”

The donations will expand action medeor's global 
project. The alliance aims to reach up to 400,000 
more people. Dr. Tom and his team also benefit 
from this support.

"If you are considering supporting us: I know the 
world is quite chaotic right now, Sudan especially. 
If you only look at the big headlines, everything 
seems hopeless. But I can tell you, with every 
donation we receive, we can do a lot of good. That 
is a huge help to us."

Following the Escalation of Violence

In light of the escalating violence 
in Sudan's North Darfur region, the 
partner organization of Aktion 
Deutschland Hilft, action medeor, is 
preparing several shipments of 
medical supplies for the 
crisis-stricken country.

2.5 Tons of Aid
At the medical supply warehouse of 
action medeor, also known as the 
"World's Emergency Pharmacy," a 
shipment of 2.5 tons of medical 
equipment and medications is already 
packed and ready for dispatch to Sudan.

The recipient is the Mother of Mercy 
Hospital in the south of the country, 
which treats many refugees from the 
conflict zones. "The few functioning
healthcare facilities in Sudan are 
often completely overwhelmed because 
the civil war has forced so many people 
to flee," explains spokesperson for the 
board of directors of action medeor.

Coordination with Local Aid Organizations
At the same time, action medeor is in 
discussions with local aid organizations 
to bring further aid supplies to Sudan and 
the particularly contested North Darfur region.

In recent months, our partner organization 
from Tönisvorst had already brought several 
shipments of medical supplies to the crisis 
region, including painkillers, antibiotics, 
medication for malaria, skin and diarrheal 
diseases, as well as medical equipment that 
is also needed for diagnosing malnutrition.

Difficult Access in Conflict Zones
We are currently working closely with our 
local partners on the ground regarding another 
delivery. “One of the challenges for 
humanitarian aid in Sudan is the difficulty of 
reaching the conflict zones,” explains 
spokesperson.

“Fortunately, we have been able to get aid 
supplies into the country via Chad in the past. 
We are working to utilize these routes even in 
the current, more critical situation. The 
people who come to the clinics are not only sick, 
they are also poor and hungry. For many, the 
Mother of Mercy Hospital is the only place for 
medical help for miles around,” he concludes.

"Like Luggage on a Truck"

Kaltouma (35) and her sister Hassaneih (25)
fled western Sudan. Both live with a 
physical disability and are visually impaired. 
They are now actively trying to start a new 
life in the Aboutengué refugee camp in eastern 
Chad.

A dangerous and arduous escape
The war in Sudan has been raging for over two 
years – violence is escalating particularly in 
the Darfur region. Millions of people have been 
displaced. Among them are the sisters Kaltouma 
and Hassaneih. After their father was killed in 
the fighting, they had to leave their hometown 
of Al-Kuraynik and embark on a dangerous and 
arduous escape.

"People threw us onto the roof of a truck like 
luggage," Kaltouma recalls. Their route took 
them through various camps for internally 
displaced people in Sudan: Sissi, Ardamata, and 
Geneina. Along the way, they were once stopped at 
a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) checkpoint – and 
robbed. "We saw men and women being beaten by the 
RSF," the sisters report.

New Challenges in the Camp
After days of uncertainty, they finally reached 
Adré, a town on the border with Chad. From there, 
they were taken to the Aboutengué camp. But even 
here, new challenges awaited them: "The living 
conditions here are very difficult," says Kaltouma.

Because they could barely move, they were 
confined to a very small space for weeks: "We 
had to crawl to get anywhere."

"Now we are free"
Help only arrived after a few weeks: Our alliance 
organization Handicap International, which offers 
rehabilitation services for refugees in the camp, 
gave the sisters wheelchairs. "Now we are free and 
happy," says Hassaneih.

"We can visit our friends, go to the market, and 
even to the soccer field." Today, they regularly 
watch soccer matches between the individual 
residential areas. "Of course, we support our 
block – Block 2!" she adds proudly. This newfound 
freedom of movement has fundamentally changed the 
sisters' everyday lives.

Despite all the setbacks, Kaltouma and Hassaneih 
are thinking about the future. "Our dream is to 
be healthy. We hope that our condition will 
continue to improve," says Kaltouma. For them, 
health means independence – just like education. 
"We have to learn and study," they explain.

The dream of owning their own fashion business
Their shared passion for fashion also plays a role. 
"We dream of having beautiful clothes. And we're 
interested in fashion," the two say. For Hassaneih, 
it's more than just a wish: "We would like to buy 
and sell clothes and fabrics at the market."

As women with disabilities, their job market 
prospects are slim. But with their idea, they don't 
just want to stand on their own two feet financially; 
they want to actively shape their new lives. "Because 
we have a disability, we can't do many jobs. But we 
think we could build a fashion business together."

Despite all the obstacles, Kaltouma and Hassaneih 
envision a future in which they are not only 
independent, but also contribute to rebuilding 
their own community, finding their own path to 
autonomy.
