On 31 August 2025, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kunar Province, Afghanistan, causing devastating human and material losses. More than 1,400 deaths and over 3,700 injuries. Thousands of homes and community buildings destroyed, leaving families displaced and exposed to harsh conditions. Remote mountainous terrain and damaged infrastructure have limited aid delivery to many affected areas. The local health facilities lack adequate staff, medicines and equipment to cope with the medical needs.
Earthquakes cause injuries and block access to care, sparking a second crisis: maternal health risks, disease outbreaks, and untreated conditions. In Kunar, isolation cuts communities off, clinics are overwhelmed, and crowded shelters plus winter raise epidemic threats. Women, children, and the elderly face the greatest risks. Survivors, especially children, suffer trauma and stress, making psychosocial support essential for recovery.
This project tackles urgent needs by deploying a mobile health team to reach isolated communities. It will provide first aid, trauma care, and consultations, while ensuring maternal and child health. Immunization, hygiene promotion, and essential medicine distribution will help prevent outbreaks. Psychosocial support will address trauma, focusing on women and children. Coordination with NGOs, UN, and local actors ensures an efficient, community-based response.
The project will improve access to emergency healthcare for 13,000 people, reducing deaths and complications from untreated injuries. Maternal and child health outcomes will be strengthened, while psychosocial support will aid survivors' recovery and well-being. Through vaccination, hygiene promotion, and disease prevention, communities will gain resilience and capacity to face future crises, ensuring sustainable health improvements beyond immediate relief.
