Many families, already penalized by heavy employment measures, face another major difficulty today: the lockdown, imposed at least until June 5, entails the paralysis of many productive activities that have had to leave many workers at home. The project wants to give concrete help to the many families who are in extreme difficulty and do not know how to get to the end of the day.
The situation is worrying: Bethlehem is a city that depends mainly on tourism and small businesses such as souvenir shops and street vendors, but now the hotels and local handicraft factories (ceramic and olive wood) are all stopped. 85% of the inhabitants lost their jobs and teachers have had wages reduced by 50%. There are many children who do not have the means to follow online lessons and many families requests for food and financial aid to pay the rent have increased exponentially.
In this situation of severe precariousness, we immediately took action by providing financial aid to families in difficulty. Our representatives do what they can to continue following the families using all possible precautions, carrying out the meetings outdoors and maintaining the appropriate safety distances. We want to provide financial support of 100 euros to about 60-90 poorer families, thus helping them to pay their water and electricity bills for the next 3 months.
