Following the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, Needs Map has carried out comprehensive efforts to support post-disaster life by establishing container cities in Hatay and Kahramanmaras. Through in-kind support, technical training, and mentorship programs, the process of rebuilding local development has been accelerated. This report summarizes the activities conducted by Needs Map in these container living spaces under specific headings.
Hatay Container Living Area (HYA)
The Hatay Container Living Space, launched in July 2023, provides shelter for approximately 1,500 people. It consists of 314 containers, including 262 residential units and several service and community-use containers.
The space includes a Community Center, library, study hall, multi-purpose room, mother-child education room, early childhood classroom, and Ministry of Education-affiliated primary and secondary school classrooms.
Education and Psychosocial Support:
The Community Center located in HYA offers psychosocial support and educational services tailored for children and families. In cooperation with the public authorities, prive sector actors and local NGOs, various activities including music, art, conversation clubs, and traditional Turkish marbling (ebru) are offered to support children’s creative and emotional development. In collaboration with Team Paribu, sports areas were constructed within the container site, allowing children and young people to engage in physical activities and organized games. These efforts reflect Needs Map’s holistic approach to disaster response—providing not only shelter but also avenues for education, psychosocial healing, cultural expression, and community well-being in the aftermath of crises.
Working Together
Through the individual and institutional support on GlobalGiving, we are providing support for the immidiate needs (clothes, food, heater, blanket, sanitary pad, diaper, clean water, medicine, and shelter) of people in need who are living in these container living areas. As Needs Map, we are also carrying out various projects in education, health, arts, and sports, it strives to build a more inclusive and equitable future.
