Project Have Hope has always been about creating lasting and sustainable change to create independence. However, sometimes a little extra help is needed. The economic toll that COVID-19 wrought is ongoing. In addition to providing emergency food baskets to families as needed, we have implemented a breakfast program to serve 200+ children breakfast ecah morning.
Fighting COVID-19 in Uganda has created near economic collapse and hardship for much of its poorer population, including the Acholi Quarter. As artisans, many of the women depend on selling their crafts in local markets. These markets have been closed since March. As businesswomen, many have depended on augmenting their income by selling mangoes or bananas in the busy streets of Kampala. They are no longer allowed to do so. Families are now trying to survive on a simple bowl of porridge.
Our hope is to provide 80 food baskets to the families most in need in the Acholi Quarter. Each basket would include posho (a starchy food staple) and beans and would feed a family of 8 for nearly two weeks. In addition to providing emergency food baskets as needed, we have implemented a breakfast program to feed children in the Acholi Quarter.
With food to feed their families, these struggling artisans and small business owners will be able to focus on new ways to generate income.
