Dear Friends,

In our visits to the Typhoon Haiyan survivors we found out that some families, epecially those living in mountainous and hard to reach, cut-off areas have not received food aid. They are subsisting on grasses, coconuts and some root crops. All the bananas and corn which are main agricultural produce here have been wiped out by the fury of the typhoon. The next months will be very critical for the survivors and the future is bleak given that aid agencies are starting to leave. Some donors are also concentrating in supporting survivors living at the side of the highways or those in the cities of Ormoc and Tacloban because their big trucks could not travel in rough and difficult terrain. We are however very capable to reach the mountainous areas because we have a 4x4 hilux pick-up and 4 motorcycles deployed in the site. As of today we have distributed a total of 930 food packs to 930 families. Our food packs are not noodles and sardines which are common packs here but Filipino foods comprising dried fish, mongo, rice, dried meat and local coffee.

Food is urgently needed

Dear Friends,

As of today, 25 days after Super Typhoon Haiyan, the feast of our patron saint, cadavers of loved ones still lined the God-forsaken streets of Tacloban. The devastation in towns and cities in the provinces of Leyte and Samar are so vast and terrifying, nobody minds anymore and the hearts have grown callous. The survivors are still dazed, trying to rebuild their lives, amidst the terrible stench and the agony of loss. The national government is inutile, as always. Christmas is in the air but no merry songs are heard. For how can we sing in this time? They say this is not the first, but one of many super-typhoons, as the polar caps are melting, because of greenhouse or whatever.

In the vast stretches of the lonely highway I see children begging, for food and water...food and water. The surviving parents and siblings back in their lonely abodes made of tins and grasses, gathered and made-up from the debris, are waiting, for whatever good Samaritans have to offer. The children say, “piso lang Sir, piso lang Sir bi” ( please give us one peso Sir, please give us one peso!) Postings of queries about lost loved ones, hastily written are pasted, hoping against hope that maybe a lost love one, a father, a brother, a mom, a friend, may yet be alive. They say there are ten thousands dead and many more missing. I can just imagine the lonely nights, the longing unanswered, terrible dreams that will not go away for a long time. The poor suffers most, for their simple houses are no match to the wall of water crashing, not one but four times on November 8. The parents still have their children around them when the first wall of water came, but the second, third and fourth onslaught of the 6 meters sea-water took their love ones away, forever. Their puny strength and love is no match.

Food my dear friends is urgently needed.
