Sanitary Toilets for 50 Poor Families

Summary

We will construct 3 toilets for 3 poorest of the poor families in order to minimize diseases caused by open-defecation. This is a last-mile project intended for very poor families in our pilot village to have toilet facilities in order to once and for all improve sanitation and prevent the spread of diseases caused by flies. Open defecation is a problem but for poor families the ability to build their own toilets is always a problem hence our support.

Challenge

Diseases caused by open defecation is a very common problem in villages where there are still families doing open defecation because they don't have any toilet facilities. Constructing a toilet by poor families is most often difficult with money barely enough for food. A low-cost toilet will cost about 250 USD and for families earning less than a dollar a day, this is difficult to construct. The need for outside help is imperative.

Solution

There are a few families in a village usually numbering 2-3 families who have no toilets simply because they could not afford to construct one. We will provide them toilets which are low-cost but sanitary and conforms to the standards and guidelines set by the health department. We have experienced toilet crews who are able to do the job skillfully. Aside from the physical toilets, we will conduct training for the beneficiaries on toilet management.

Long-Term Impact

When there are families in a community openly defecating the problem with disease infestation caused by flies is eminent. This problem can be solved by the construction of toilets for the identified families so that open-defecation and diseases is prevented. This will then translate to healthy communities and the prevention of diseases.
