Several earthquakes and a destructive tsunami hit the Island of Sulawesi on Sept 28th, 2018. The infrastructure of the island is severely destroyed. Currently, there is no power and water supply. Over 1.400 people were killed, 200.000 people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and 65.000 houses were completely destroyed. The member organisations of Aktion Deutschland Hilft are in Sulawesi and give humanitarian aid to the people who are affected.
As streets, bridges and public sites have been destroyed by earthquakes and tsunami, it is difficult to access the region and distribute emergency relief items to the afflicted people. Furthermore, petrol is scarce, which make distributions even more challenging. It is not yet clear, how badly the villages and cities in Donggala are affected, as the communication system broke down.
The member organisations of Aktion Deutschland Hilft are on site, to bring emergency relief care to the afflicted. Our teams are helping in the search and rescue operations to find survivors under the ruins. Additionally, they distribute water, food, hygiene articles, tents and medicine. Furthermore, emergency shelters are set up, where the thousands of homeless people find refuge.
The current natural disasters have had a huge impact on the island of Sulawesi: In some cities, 100% of buildings are destroyed. Streets and bridges are damaged, the water and power system is not fully functional any more. It will take months and years to rebuild all public and private houses and the much needed infrastructure. After our emergency humanitarian aid in the next weeks, Aktion Deutschland Hilft is planning to support the reconstruction of Sulawesi. Please support our work!
