Emergency Response to Ebola Outbreak in Guinea

Summary

On February 14, the Government of the Republic of Guinea declared a new case of Ebola in Gouecke sub-prefecture, N'Zerekore Prefecture. Three Ebola cases have been confirmed so far with an additional four suspected as of February 17. This is the first resurgence of Ebola in Guinea since the 2014 - 2016 West Africa massive outbreak which claimed more than 11,300 lives, with over 28,600 recorded cases. International Medical Corps is deploying to combat this new Ebola outbreak in Guinea.

Challenge

A new Ebola outbreak was declared in Guinea on February 14, following the confirmation of three Ebola cases so far. The cases are coming from the prefecture of N'zerekore in the southeast of the country, a forest region that borders Sierra Leone and Liberia. With the epicenter of the current outbreak in a border area, there is also concern for the spread of the virus.

Solution

International Medical Corps, in coordination with the Guinea Ministry of Health and the National Health Security Agency, is deploying medical teams to help combat this Ebola outbreak as quickly as possible. We are ready to address prevention through reinforcement of isolation and containment measures, building community awareness, as well as providing critical supplies. We remain ready to scale-up to provide case management and treatment.

Long-Term Impact

International Medical Corps has responded to every major Ebola outbreak, including the 2014 - 2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak and the recurring Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2018 to 2021. Across our responses, we've trained local health workers to prevent and treat Ebola and will apply this expertise to support Guinea and the global community in the face of this new outbreak.
