This project will provide debris removal and emergency relief supplies to families affected by Hurricane Irma in Florida
Hurricane Irma, making landfall in early September, is one of the strongest storms ever measured across the Atlantic and has caused devastating damage in the US, in South Florida and the Florida Keys. The storm has led to loss of life, and both massive and widespread destruction of homes and other infrastructures.
Drawing on close to two decades of humanitarian responses in 41 countries, including in 11 US States dating back to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, IsraAID will deploy a team to Florida to provide debris removal services and emergency supplies to affected community members and home owners, prioritizing those who do not have insurance or the financial means to clear the debris, and those who are unable to clean up their homes for any other reason.
This cleaning stage is crucial to avoid major health and hygiene issues from contaminated water and open sewage. It also has an important psychological impact; home owners are often so overwhelmed by the loss of their homes and all their belongings that it can easily put them into a downward spiral of despair and depression. Cleaning up the mess helps create a positive momentum towards rehabilitation and recovery, and reduces long-term trauma
