This project provides emergency support to students at risk in Liberia. The emergency grant provides one-off help to cover items such as students' tuition, rent and boarding; transportation, medical and meals; reading materials and internet subscription or to cover unexpected travel. The emergency grant is intended to support students at risk of child marriage, students at risk of disruption to their studies, and students who require assistance to travel to academic programs.
Liberia emerged from 14 years of civil war as one of the poorest countries in the world. The education system is broken and maybe families cannot afford to send their children to school. Many students are shut out from paying school fees and all of the costs associated with their education because of their family's financial situation. This also puts young people at risk of being hurt by people who offer to pay for their education but then expect favors in return.
We can help students pay their fees and living expenses that allow students to concentrate on their studies. By providing emergency support we can provide security and protection against sexual violation of students, cover medical requirements for students that school insurance does not normally cover, and help with unexpected travel or gaps in scholarship funds. This helps students meet their daily needs so that they can focus on getting the education they need.
The emergency fund is intended to stop high performing students from dropping out of school or university due to their financial situation. By bridging the gap through one-off emergency grants, students are able to graduate with the qualification that they have worked so hard towards and be in a better position to support themselves and their families.
