Summary

This project will build an Emergency Unit in a health center located in Veron, an underserved community in Punta Cana, eastern region of Dominican Republic, for the benefit of 54,000 people (official) in need. The population will be greatly impacted given the overcrowding that exists in this center, which is the only option for them in the whole area. The new unit will include waiting area, Doctor office, three private stations equipped appropiately, rest rooms and small storage area.

Challenge

The Health Center of Veron serves approximately 150 patients daily (65 are emergency patients) counting with an insufficient infrastructure. Besides the emergency patients are accompanied by friends or relatives, it becomes a crowded and chaotic indoor place which affects the performance of the medical staff and the quality of the health services. This center is the only one they can afford, due to their low incomes. To save their lives it is essential to act quickly and efficiently.

Solution

The project will build and furnish a suitable area separate from the main facility to provide a faster and more efficient medical emergency service. The patients will access health care with physician on duty 24 hours, every day of the year, also taking into account the privacy of the patients. This area will have Doctor office, three stations for patients, nurse station, rest room and waiting area. On the other hand, the whole center will operate in much better conditions.

Long-Term Impact

The Emergency Unit will be able to offer to any patient, at any time, the possibility of receiving prompt and efficient medical attention, thus reducing the mortality index of the poor population. This project will impact in a positive way 54,000 under served people (official) who have a limited access to private health care services.
