Ben and Buddy

By Genevieve Frederick | Founder/President

Buddy
Buddy

Last year staff took and made over 42,000 calls.  Ben is just one caller who we helped.  An average case from the time of the first call until the hospital invoice is paid has a timeframe of 12 days.  19% of cases were completed the same day when there is a true emergency.   Each case can take up to six phone calls.

Ben lived in Roseburg, OR in a tent under a bridge in the area.  Ben has been homeless for a year.  Ben heard about Feeding Pets of the Homeless from a partner organization, Street Dogs and a friend.   He has a friend that provides transportation.  He is on SNAP benefits (pet food is not approved.)

Buddy is a 6-year-old Boxer mix who is neutered, was gifted to Ben by an ex-girlfriend.  Buddy fractured his leg from an unknown trauma after a storm.  Ben was able to get him to a specialty center.  Street Dogs helped pay for that visit.  Street Dogs advised Ben to call Feeding Pets of the Homeless because Buddy still needed x-rays of the leg to see if he needed surgery.

Ben contacted Feeding Pets of the Homeless.  A case manager did an intake and homeless verification was done by Street Dogs who knew Ben and Buddy and his circumstances.   We approved another exam and x-rays for Buddy so the veterinarian could determine if Buddy needed surgery or just bandage/splint changes.  The x-rays, bandage change and pain medications were approved for $488 and for the recheck.

The veterinarian determined that Buddy only needed bandage/splint changes each week for 8 – 12 weeks, another x-ray and meds.  Another veterinarian was found closer to where Ben and Buddy lived.   Their estimate came to $1198.

Ben was very appreciative and thanked Feeding Pets of the Homeless for being able to help Buddy with this injury.

Ben and Buddy have since moved into California.  We hope that they are well and have found shelter.

(We have collaborated with Streets Dogs on numerous occasions when they are not able to treat serious injuries or illness that need treatment at a hospital.)
