Closing the gap

Dear supporters, family and friends of Serendipity,

For the past two years we have been able to empower and uplift 50 women thus farout of poverty to reduce post harvest losses from their farm produce. We are still unable to garner enough funds during this time frame to procure another processing machine such that we can present to amother batch of women cooperatives and train them thus we decided to restructure our project to include more women into the already exisiting three cooperatives that we have thus far given the machines.

We at Serendipity, the community leaders, the heads of the three women cooperatives and the leaders of the Tofa Community Developement Association agreed that the sales of the produce after all deductions made from the extracted oil and groundnut cake will go towards training more women and bringing them on board to become members.

During this period only 3 women have been trained and included into the cooperatives but they were not given any grant as a their contribution but rather will be paid for their contribution to the business in other ways such as marketing of the products. However the Tofa Developement Association are making efforts to get a loan from the micro finance bank to cushion the effect of a shortfall and to assist the women more.

Another strategy of raising funds and become self reliant is the hire of those machines to other women that want to process other farm produce at a fee of $1 per day and thus far has been working well for them.

Much work still needs to be done and one thing we have gotten off during this period from this after meeting with all the stakeholders is access to market as this has been the major problem. We have listened and we are restrategising and restructuring the project to see how best we can fit in this new developement to the project.

Yours Truly,

Niimatullah Umar
