This project will be implemented in 10 primary schools and surrounding communities in Arivu and Ajia Sub Counties, Arua District for 1 year. Despite commitments to international statutes such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) that Uganda ratified in 1989, that out laws acts of Violence Against Children in schools; Violence Against Children is increasing (Circular NO.2/2017 Ministry of Education and Sports August 2017) hence the urgent need for this project.
Despite commitments to international statutes such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) that Uganda ratified in 1989, the domestic Violence Act (2010), Employment Act (2006) that out laws acts of Violence Against Children in schools; Violence Against Children has increased by 65% in Arua. Adults/ teachers routinely abuse their position of responsibility, authority, power to administer severe punishment with a belief of instilling good behaviour in children.
The children will be empowered through strengthening of Child Rights Clubs (CRCs); provide letter link boxes to aid reporting of cases of Violence Against Children; conduct legal aid clinics to create awareness; provide basic needs to the victims of Violence Against Children (VAC); and provide trainings to children, teachers, parents, opinion leaders, religious and cultural leaders in life skills, prevention of VAC, alternatives to corporal punishment, gender mainstreaming and record keeping.
The potential long-term impact of this project is to contribute to the promotion and enhancement of a safe and protective environment for15,000 children in schools and communities in Arua District, Uganda.
