Family of the Month: A single woman's journey of strength & struggle!
Single woman (Name changed for privacy), 41 years old: Mother
Siri (Name changed), 15 years old: Daughter
Riri (Name changed), 10 years old: Daughter
Single woman (Name changed for privacy) was born into poverty in the village of Kaskikot. Her childhood was marked by adversity. While her brothers pursued education, Single woman (Name changed for privacy)'s schooling ended abruptly at fifth grade due to financial constraints and gender biases. Instead, she had to shoulder the household chores and tending to livestock.
When she was 26 years old, marriage was arranged by relatives to Husband, (Name hidden, aged 40), a man from a distant part of Nepal. He was a quiet, rather shy person and he treated her with respect. Within the next 5 years, she became a mother to two daughters, while Husband (Name hidden) who found work abroad would come to visit every two years. Everything went seemingly well, when suddenly Husband (Name hidden)’s dark past came to the surface.
The facade of her husband’s shadow life crumbled when Single woman (Name changed for privacy) uncovered that he had committed a heinous crime. Having murdered his sister-in-law, he was imprisoned for over a decade.
She was devastated and her trust and love for this man gave way to fear and terror.
Literally drained, she returned to her ancestral home in Kaskikot after her mother's passing. She was provided a place to stay but she had no income and working as a labourer in the fields, she barely earned enough to provide food for her daughters. Despite her tireless efforts, Single woman (Name changed for privacy) found it increasingly difficult to meet their basic needs. Due to this condition, Single woman (Name changed for privacy)’s brother agreed to take Riri (Name changed) with his family in Beni. She stays and studies there with her maternal uncle, whilst her heart and mind is with her mother.
With barely enough to sustain her family, Single woman (Name changed for privacy)'s plight caught the attention of our network partner, Nepal House, who referred her to us.
Recognizing their dire condition, we have welcomed Single woman (Name changed for privacy) and her daughters into our fold. Riri (Name changed ) too will soon be able to return into the loving home of her mother and sister and this after she finishes this educational year.
For them, this support signifies more than mere material assistance; it symbolizes a lifeline, a beacon of hope amid the darkness of despair. With the backing of the Bahini Educare Foundation, Single woman (Name changed for privacy) and her daughters are eventually united and will live as a family, fortified by their resilience and determination.
This intervention underscores the foundation's unwavering commitment to uplifting destitute single mothers in need, ensuring that no one is left behind. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all partners and supporters who stand in solidarity with families like Single woman (Name changed for privacy)'s, offering hope and compassion in their time of need.
It’s simple – it's simply BEF.
Sincerely yours
Surendra, Raymond & the TEAM
