Challenge

The official literacy rate in Pakistan is estimated at 58% of the total population, however, this statistic is inflated. The way to determine literacy is not through education qualification, instead, it comprises of people who can only write a few words and read the newspaper in their native language. According to estimates, the population of only Korangi and Landhi Town (a backward area of the city Karachi) is 1,213,252, out of which 10% are women with the age of 15-25 years, the target users.

Solution

As an intermediate college, Khadija Girls College aims to provide the pre-requisites to the young girls of this locality to pursue undergraduate studies in the field of their interests. Along with the options to study the fields of either science, humanities or commerce, we also offer academic and career counselling services to the girls and gives them the boost they need to receive higher education. KGC wishes to empower young women and help bring change through these girls in the vicinity.

Long-Term Impact

This project aims to tackle the social issue of girls' literacy. We also provide need-based scholarships to our graduates who wish to pursue university education but don't have the financial resources. The objective includes creating job opportunities for young women in a fast-moving and competitive era, providing them with a skill set that is at par with the expectations of the professional world. KGC is currently aiming to offer certified Computer courses for other girls in the vicinity.
