Challenge

The features of the education system combined with the social difficulties faced by vulnerable children contribute to the perpetuation of a poverty cycle in Mauritius. Although access to education is available to virtually all pupils, more than 30% of them fail at the end of primary school. Children coming from underprivileged families are especially affected by years of failure. TIPA will provide these kids and their parents with skills supporting their engagement in the learning process.

Solution

TIPA will provide art courses (visual arts and drama) to the kids, fostering on the development of life skills such as participation and self-confidence. These competences are prerequisites to academic learning and will favour the development of their full potential. We will also provide the parents with training in parenting skills through arts and positive psychology, so that they can better support the progress of their kids.

Long-Term Impact

The project will build capacity of 450 vulnerable children and 50 parents, allowing them to break the poverty cycle. Change expected: 1) Children feel respected, are self-motivated and want to participate. 2) Parents are engaged in their child's education. The trained parents will be equipped with interactive pedagogy approach and tools. TIPA will encourage and support them, to act as change agents in the locality, in order to impact on dozens of other adults, youth and kids.
