Challenge

1/3 of girls in #Cameroon are married before their 18th birthday, most of them are only 13-15 years old when they are forced into marriage with, most often than not, older men. Girls who marry early are more likely to experience mental health issues, violence, abuse, and forced/coerced sexual relation The absence of strong community mechanisms and goodwill to address the issue continues to undermine the efforts of women and girls to achieve their basic rights and to escape pressures and abuses.

Solution

Our intervention would set up and equip vocational skills and entrepreneurial training centers for the empowerment of these women and girls, provide start up capital for income generating activities, provide full academic support and scholarship for continued education, provide daily basic bodily upkeep and health needs, establish shelters and create safe environments for child protection through training these girls and also community leaders on child protection.

Long-Term Impact

1. Alternative economic and social roles for child/brides exist and are possible through the availability of educational and vocational training sessions. 2. Girls develop solidarity among themselves through emerging community peer groups and collective action. 3. Community is aware about the child brides problematic and an environment of support and defense for the women and girls rights is established. 4. Partnerships are established with community and stakeholders to address child marriage
