Learning Camps help girls upgrade their studies

Girls in Learning Camp

Dear Friends,

AAI-sponsored schools offer week-long Learning Camps for students to catch up on their studies. There are many reasons why students don't always attend school, especially girls, who often have family responsibilities. Girls, loyal to their impoverished families, who have been displaced from their homes due to storms and floods are especially vulnerable to missed time in school.

The Learning Camps concentrate on Reading and Math. Children receive individual attention, as well as assisting each other in small groups. AAI helps to provide books and other learning materials for the students to use. Like the Summer Reading Camps, the year-round Learning Camps bring in children from disparate communities to improve their basic skills.  They are chosen regardless of their upbringing in a province recovering from the COVID pandemic, lack of good governance, and religious or ethnic violence.

This project -- for Kindergarten through 6th grade pupils -- empowers boys and girls in Sulu Province's 360 inhabited islands. Girls are often the majority, living with their families in squatter ghettos after being displaced from their homes. We are grateful to our colleagues from public schools and Notre Dame College for assisting those who live in open-air evacuation centers. AAI provides books and school supplies to continue their education. At least one daily meal, prepared in school by parents and teachers, provides protein, veggies, and fruit to improve energy for nutrition and wellness. We also provide clean water for hygiene, soaps, toothbrushing and other health supplies.
