Dear Friends,

Women and girls of all ages are the most vulnerable when communities become homeless due to calamities including earthquakes, typhoons, floods, volcanoes, and war.

Asia America Initiative, through our volunteer partners and GlobalGiving donors, provide invaluable gifts of books, home grown foods, farming tools and hygiene for long term success. This project empowers Filipino girls made homeless from disasters by providing school supplies and hygiene materials for health and wellness.

In this report, we highlight one of our leading-edge scholarship programs.

Asia America Initiative is working with a nursing school in Jolo, Sulu to provide scholarships for professional training in psychology with an emphasis on trauma healing. In order to benefit their Muslim communities, these young female students seek to provide compassionate care to women and girls who live in impoverished and calamity-prone environments. They integrate best methods of Western post-traumatic stress counseling with their Tausug tribe’s spiritual beliefs. They also build post-pandemic inner peace and conduct activities to help others who have become emotionally isolated in their communities.

The program launched over a year ago and is having outstanding success. "To feel the encouragement coming from kind and generous new friends from outside of our community is an amazing gift," says Prof. Zhea at Notre Dame College of Jolo.  "Our psychology students are already doing outreach into local schools. Artistic supplies and text books provided by AAI facilitates communication with those who are in need."

Asia America Initiative’s cost-effective projects empower communities to overcome homelessness by supporting their wellness and educational needs. Prof. Zhea says: "Literacy, writing skills, and interpersonal caring inspires confidence and self-worth. These tools and peer counseling enable girls to recover after calamities."

Education helps them to develop job and academic skills. Staying in school helps them to fully learn vocational skills which will help them feed their families. AAI's long-term goal is to encourage all youth to excel in their studies in a safe environment in order to achieve their dreams with dignity.
