This project will promote gender equality in Katete, Zambia. 500 vulnerable women will be empowered with technical knowledge in agriculture management and connected to local micro financial institution. Financial literacy training will be provided in the area of saving and loan association, organic and agro farming in order to empower women and reduce household poverty.Through this project 500 women will be socially and economically empowered and able to provide basic needs for their families.
Katete district in Zambia, is one of the country's major food baskets, women account for 85% of small scale farmers. Even if women actively participate to grow cash crop the earnings are all for the man who is the head of the household. The contribution of the woman and children is left at the mercy of the man to appreciate. Women dependent on the men and so the benefits of their agriculture products revolve around men and this scenario leaves women to be more vulnerable.
This project will provide financial support, training and assist in self-help groups in forming village saving schemes. 500 women will be empowered with technical knowledge in growing maize, rear chickens, cattle, goats, sheep and how to manage small scale businesses. Through income generating activities, women will be able to support themselves. As women organize themselves into self-help groups, they are able to influence decision-making in the traditionally male-dominated society.
The number of women, who are living in absolute poverty will be reduced. Through income generating activities, vulnerable rural women will be socially and economically empowered and be able to provide basic needs for their families. This project will empower 500 vulnerable women in income generating activities and this will result in increased access and control over financial resources by rural women. This project is self sustainable even after its gone, trained women can easily replicate it.
