Stealth Sisters Paused Due to Taliban Interference

By Allie Renar | Operations & Finance Manager

The students and teachers in our Stealth Sisters program are eagerly awaiting classes after being forced to pause operations to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved in the program. The students had expected to return in March but reports have suggested the Taliban is on high alert for schools serving over-aged girls. In Kabul, multiple centers were shut down on April 1st amid accusations of enrolling girls over 6th grade. It is with an abundance of caution that our program partners have decided to hold off on restarting this program while new security measures are put in place.

This program is vital to young women, currently banned from education throughout the country. It provides a safe community for students to discuss topics ranging from women's rights and gender norms to menstrual health and prenatal care. The young women in this program are eager to continue learning English and computer skills, empowering them to build their futures despite the Taliban's ongoing gender apartheid.

In January, the program was paused due to increased scrutiny from the Taliban. While the girls were devastated to take a break from their only opportunity for community and learning, safety is paramount in these situations. Since the disruption, our partners are working to put additional security measures in place to prevent further incidents.

As we prepare to relaunch this empowering course, we ask our supporters to share the importance of this work with their networks to bring more support to the brave students of Afghanistan. Every dollar and every share helps us change the lives of the girls in this ground-breaking program.
