Global Educational Empowerment for 100,000 Girls

With its Sisterhood Empowerment Academy (SEA) headquartered in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), Sisterhood Agenda has been addressing the health, cultural and social issues of women and girls for over twenty years.

Through our work we have discovered how trauma, poor health and lack of fitness have disturbing effects on the welfare of woman and girls, particularly for women and girls who live in rural areas, are culturally resistent to organieed sports activities and have strayed from their healthier more traditional diets. SHE has been implemented since 2006, however, this is the first time it will be implemented in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

SHE includes a holistic and innovative approach with a healing paradigm, sports programs, and health promotion at the SEA.  SHE is an important aspect of Sisterhood Agenda's Global Empowerment for 100,000 Girls, especially since it introduces our programming to a new popoulation in the Caribbean and is uniquely trauma-informed.

Starting Saturday, March 19, 2016, SHE project staff will implement evidence-based youth activities for 50 girls ages 12-17 at the SEA in St. John. The main objective of the newly expanded SHE initiative is to recognize, address, and diminish multiple major health disparities, promote healthy behavior and teamwork.

In addition to integrating trauma-informed (TI) sister circles in Sisterhood Agenda's SHE:  Sisters, Healthy & Empowered program, we are offering sister circles for college students in March 2016, in recognition of Women's History Month. 

The TI sister circles for college students will focus on sexual assault isues on campus, healing processes, and identification of local resources.These unique services will be coordinated with university's who are part tof the Associaton of American Universities and Sisterhood Agenda is requesting sponsorship from each participating institution.

Sisterhood Agenda's TI sister circles are offered in an innovative online format to:  1) pool talent in offering support, 2) maximize participation from any geographical area with Internet access, and 3) to minimize costs. It will be interesting to see how this works in terms of effectiveness and impact.

College students are not the only ones targeted for educational empowerment in March 2016!  Sisterhood Agenda will offer another TI sister circle for helping all girls throughout our global network identify and respond to traumatic events in their lives.
