*Report: From Streets To Class*
*Theme: Second Chances, Brighter Futures at Gaba Hope for Kids*
We got her from the streets. Now she is in class.
That sentence holds a whole story. Streets mean survival, noise, and missed childhood. Class means pencils, lessons, and a chance to dream again. Moving from one to the other does not happen by accident. It happens when someone removes the barriers and holds the door open.
*What Life On The Streets Looked Like*
Before we found her, school was not an option. Days were spent finding food, staying safe, and doing whatever work she could get. No uniform. No books. No one asking if she did her homework. Learning was replaced by looking out for herself. The longer a child stays on the street, the harder it is to imagine a classroom again.
*What It Took To Bring Her To Class*
We did not just enroll her and walk away. We walked with her:
1. *Basic Needs First*: She received a school kit with uniform, shoes, notebooks, and pens. No child should be sent home for missing materials on day one.
2. *Safety + Belonging*: Peer mentors spent time building trust. We helped her feel safe in a classroom again and connected her with classmates who welcome her.
3. *Learning Catch-Up*: She joined study groups and received extra support to bridge gaps from time away. Starting over is hard, so we went step by step.
4. *Guardian + Community Support*: We worked with guardians and community members to make sure home would support her return to school, not pull her back to the street.
*What Is Changing Now*
Today she walks into class instead of walking the streets. Teachers say she listens, tries, and is learning to trust that she belongs there. She has a desk, a seat, and friends who save her a place. Attendance is consistent because school now feels safer than the alternative.
One day she told her mentor: “I used to count coins. Now I count letters.” That shift matters. When a child moves from survival to learning, her future changes.
This also protects her from cycles that keep children on the street. Education gives her skills, confidence, and options beyond day-to-day survival.
*Next Steps To Keep Her In Class*
To make sure she does not slip back, we need to:
1. *Consistent Support*: Keep providing materials and mentorship so school stays possible.
2. *Emotional Care*: Continue check-ins with mentors who understand trauma and transitions.
3. *Long-Term Stability*: Work with family and community so home supports school every term.
*Closing*
We got her from the streets. Now she is in class. One child back in school proves what is possible for many more. When we reach children where they are, we can walk with them to where they are meant to be.
*Call to Action*
Want to help us bring more children from streets to classrooms? Your support covers a school kit plus mentorship for one child as they start over. .
Every child deserves a desk, not a street corner.
