Starmeka Wasn't Alone Anymore

By Bianca Miller | Administrative Coordinator

Starmeka Jones

Starting college is one thing. Staying long enough to finish is another.

Starmeka planned to go to college right after high school, but she found out she was pregnant as she graduated. Determined to continue her education, she looked for an opportunity to enroll. She earned a Medical Office Administration certification, then a Pharmacy Technician certificate, but the stable job she was working toward didn’t come.

She lost her home and moved back in with her parents, who were in the middle of a divorce. Then she learned her financial aid was running out.

No one had to convince Starmeka that her education mattered. What she needed was a helping hand, an opportunity, and the stability to keep going. That is where you came in.

Your generosity provided more than $5,800 in rent assistance, $2,120 in childcare, and $1,550 for food and youth program expenses, plus transportation, counseling, and essentials like a new phone and Christmas gifts for her children. Imagine knowing childcare is handled, so you can sit down to study without wondering who’s watching your kids.

That’s what you gave Starmeka. It wasn’t a handout. It was stability, and the freedom to focus on what she was working toward.

In 2025, Starmeka graduated. Today, she’s pursuing her Master’s in Public Administration.

Right now, 20 single parents are in H.O.P.E.’s program, and three mothers are receiving additional support through our partnership with Nana Grants. To date, H.O.P.E. has served 168 parents and 335 children, with an 82% graduation rate.

Somewhere right now, another parent is filling out an application. Looking for an opportunity and community. Looking for a helping hand.

If they get their yes, they won’t just get a check. They’ll get peace of mind and stability, knowing their rent is covered and their children are cared for.

That’s what you really give them. THANK YOU!
