We are delighted to share a story from our partner in the Gambia:
During a visit to a very remote area, we had the opportunity to witness the incredible work being done there. On our way back to Bissau, the vehicle broke down on a Sunday when everyone we knew who could assist us was in church. We found ourselves in front of a house, where the women generously brought chairs to sit on and offered us safe drinking water. We spent a long time under a canopy of mango trees, much like a scene from a movie, and took advantage of the time to discuss plans for the village without interruptions.
As the day went on, hunger set in. The pastor's wife was preparing lunch for us, and we were concerned that we might miss it as time passed. While we bravely drank more water to stave off our hunger, the house's women surprised us by bringing out a table and serving a local specialty: brown rice with shredded fish and other fresh ingredients. It wasn't just the hunger that made it taste so good—the food was genuinely fantastic. One of the women had a newborn, and the other was expecting. After returning to The Gambia, we sent two baby bags to these women, a small gesture of gratitude for their kindness.
In addition, we are pleased to report that the clinic recently received 13 baby bags. While we've faced challenges in maintaining consistent record-keeping because of the departure of a critical nurse, efforts are being made to improve the situation. Plans are underway to source baby bag items and a sewing machine directly from Guinea-Bissau. Moreover, we recently purchased 48 of each essential item for the baby bags, and it's encouraging to report that we distributed eight bags to eight women who delivered at the clinic.
